Taiji Matsue’s work offers views of the Earth’s surface from various locations around the world. Avoiding shadow as much as possible and shooting in clear weather, his stark, monochrome depictions of landscape deprive all sites of existential or endemic meaning. Matsue’s images take on the appearance of collected specimens; whether the subject is a vast cityscape or an empty desert, it is regarded as no more than a fragment of the face of the Earth. The intricate black and white patterns in his work evoke a daydream-like beauty and intensity, a remarkable vision achieved through his unique style.
