Taiji Matsue is known for his typographical study of the surface of the earth around the world - his range of subjects includes both the natural and the manmade - mountains, deserts, forests, cities etc., with the dispassionate eye of a geographer, his trained profession. "世界・表層・時間" (literally translated as "World・Surface・Time") is the catalog for his exhibition at IZU PHOTO MUSEUM in 2012. The exhibition features 50 new works including still photography as well as video works. The exhibition also features the series "JP-22" (2005), the aerial photography on Shizuoka Prefecture.
About Taiji Matsue
Born in Tokyo in 1963, Matsue graduated from University of Tokyo in 1987 with a major in geology. He won the Higashikawa New Photographer Award in 1996, the Kimura Ihei Photography Award in 2002, the Higashikawa Domestic Photographer Award in 2012 and the 25th Society of Photography Award in 2013. Recent solo exhibitions include JP-22 at Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum (Shizuoka, 2006) and Surficial Survey at the IZU PHOTO MUSEUM (Shizuoka, 2012). Recent major group exhibitions include Artist File 2011: The NACT Annual Show of Contemporary Art at the National Art Center Tokyo (2011), Aomori Earth at Aomori Museum of Art (2014), Sapporo International Art Festival (2014) and A Bird’s-eye View of the World at Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art (2015). Matsue also participated in the traveling exhibition Logical Emotions, which was held in in Switzerland, Poland and Germany (2014-2015).
