2020 was a year full of challenges and lessons learned. The Hong Kong International Photo Festival in 2020 featured Satellite Exhibitions of 28 local image makers: together, we reflected upon our values and ways of living under such ‘state of exception’.
A time capsule, a reminder for our future selves of the indescribable year, this compilation gathers interviews and the works of the image makers, as well as the making of the exhibitions which took place amidst quarantines, social distancing and the multifront pressure. The Festival team spoke with each image maker in depth in hope of bringing readers into their creative process and inviting candid discussions. The compilation highlights the many different facets of photography, including social investigations, intimate confessions, records of brutal protest scenes and conceptual explorations. Despite the image makers being from different generations, many of their works speak of the political turmoil in recent years; collectively, they are witnessing history, questing for identity and defending freedom through photography.
The compilation is designed by Prague-based Hong Kong graphic designer Dio Lau; edited by the Festival project team with Chinese-English parallel text; hardback bound; limited edition of 250.
